AP English
I
realize the the summer essay for part two seems to be lost in the
shuffle, but worry not, we should get to it during the week of the
14th.
Do not forget that on Monday, the 14th, you will turn in ONE
of the essays, revised, from part 1 of the summer homework. The
other two essays should be acocmpanied by a short reflective piece
in which you explain what it would take for that piece to score an
8 or 9 on the AP scale.
Next week we will have discussions of The Poisonwood Bible
and Daisy Miller. Again, I wish to stress the importance of doing
your part in the discussion. Talk! Ask Questions! Challenge the
thinking of your peers!
You should have a copy of Heart of Darkness. Read that as
well. We will not begin heavy discussions until the week of
September 21, though some themes may come up in our discussion of
Poisonwood.
You should also begin the search for a play to read as part
of the outside reading.

We will begin the week of the 14th following up on our
investigation of how we see the world around us through our
experiences. To that end, remember to come to class on Monday with
some ideas regarding symbols that represent aspects of your
life.
The rest of the plan for Monday is to take a look at a
painting and work with how, and what it communicates to us.
We will look at the Langston Hughes poem 'Theme for English
B.' We will use the poem to complete a couple of
objectives. First we will do a bit of analysis using the TWIST
strategy. After that, we will try to write a bit of our own
poetry.
Continuing our venture in to poetic elements and culture, we
will read 'Where I'm From.' You too will write a poem like this.
The pattern is pretty easy to mimic, and it is an interesting way
to look at some of the symbols you may want to include in the
artistic representation you will complete for the first embedded
assessment (remember, that is due on the 21st of September).
As we finish the week, there should be some class time to
plan and design the representation you will complete for the
embedded assessment.
