Welcome to
March, 2010
Parents and Students--Remember a great source for homework help is
www.piercecountylibrary.org which provides online coaching and
interaction--available 7 days a week 1:00 P.M. -10:00 P.M.
CBA's are completed and returned. Embedded Assessment 2 for
our Springboard Unit (graphic novel illustrating Jonas's journey in
The Giver) was turned in Feb. 26.
There will be a big test upcoming that will assess how students are
doing with their grammar studies. Of course, we'll have our
usual study sheets, practice review drills in class, and plenty of
warning ahead of time as far as date to be given.
Composition will focus on transitions, variety in sentence
structure and other skills emphasized in SpringBoard. Also, we'll
be commencing a new unit titled Real-Life Challenges--a study of
the media and its impact on us individually and a culture.
Should be fun and informative. Final assessment for this one
is a persuasive essay.
We are beginning Figurative Language studies and will learn to use
and recognize different literary devices in our reading and
writing. We'll apply our learning in the poems we
compose.
Social Studies --we are continuing our study of the birth of our
nation and the different groups and who contributed to the
beginnings of our country. March 11 Our class and Mr. Vaughan's are
going to Olympia to view the Washington State. We still need
parent chaperones if you would like to accompany us.
Still an on-going issue--
Please impress upon your child/children the importance of neatness
and legibility when completing their work. AND impress upon
them, the importance of bringing their books and necessary
materials to class. This time of year, lack of attention to detail
sometimes takes over and can affect overall grade. Also,
review the Social Studies Expectations sheet in their
notebook to assess what constitutes a complete answer,
assignment requirements, etc.
*****Important*****Please impress upon you child/children that the
LAKF sheets are for their continued use and study. We are
amassing what amounts to a grammar handbook, so they can refer to
it at any time to assist with studies in that area.
Expectation is that students are studying/reviewing this
section of their notebook on a continued basis in order to help
them learn the material.(It's easy to understand if they listen
carefully to classroom instruction, but reviewing it at home. helps
retain the learning
**Parents--please note--JAN. 26 (last day of first semester--I
explained why and I informed students that I would be
checking daily or at least every other day (for the next two
weeks) and sporadically after that for MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE
CLASS-- the fact that they are coming prepared to class with all
the materials needed which was stated in their first-of-the-year
letter to you and on this website and, of course, to them
throughout first semester. One, it is a good way to boost
their grades, because of free points offered by me. Please
check the Parent Connect to see if your child is bringing materials
needed--if he/she is receiving O's, it is hurting the overall grade
and him/her by coming to class unprepared for the day's work. It is
totally in their control as to whether they are receiving these
points or not. It is the materials expectation that has been
in place since September.
PARENTS--PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CHECK THIS WEBSITE, DAILY, UNDER
ANNOUNCEMENTS
SECTION, TO ACCESS AGENDA INFORMATION FOR THE DAY (IN OTHER WORDS,
THE INFORMATION STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO RECORD IN THEIR AGENDA
THAT DAY)
