Assignment #1Create your "Digital Photography" Folder  in your "My Documents" Folder...Open your "My Documents" Folder, create a New Folder, and rename it "Digital Photography My Period."  You will use this folder to save your work, and to have easy access to your images.

Assignment #2Turn in Any Image...Find a school appropriate image of just about anything of your choosing.  Open it with an Image Editting program, such as Microsoft Picture Manager, or Microsoft Windows 2011, or iPhoto.  Edit the image to an aspect ratio of 5 x 7.  Save As...Remember that any time you want to save a picture, always use "Save As" instead of "Save"--that way, you will not permanently alter the original source image.  Digitally turn in this image..."Save As" the image to the appropriate folder...1st or 2nd period in "GERNON" folder in the \\kopachuck\stu-pub folder.

Assignment #34 Faces...Working witha partner or team of 3 photographers, take turns taking four pictures of each other.  When you take the pictures, get close to your model so he or she takes up most of the space of the frame in the viewfinder, but don't cut off parts of his or her head.  In other words, leave a little bit of space around his or her head.
--Image #1Smile for the camera...This image will become part of your ID Badge for capturing images around the school.  Smile nicely for the camera, like it is school picture day.
--Image #2Face Forward, Oops! You're in trouble...Imagine that you are in trouble with your parents, one of your teachers, or the principal or vice principal, and they are taking your picture to remember who you are for the future.  Look serious, and perhaps a little upset...?
--Image #3Profile view, Oops! You're in trouble...Again, continue to imagine that you are in trouble, but this time turn sideways to the camera and allow the profile view of your face to be photographed.
--Image #4Silly Face...Maybe try two or three of these images, look straight at the camera, but goofup your face. Stick out your tongue to one side, look off to one side, raise one eyebrow, squish you mouth to one side...be silly, have fun with some goofy faces.

Assignment #8: Image Abstraction by Using Filters in Aviary--4 Images...Change one Image in Aviary Using the Filters to Create 4 Different Abstract Images

1.  Near the top of this website, under the picture of Tugger, click on the link to your class's Aviary Education, or click this link... www.aviaryeducation.com/KopachuckDigitalPhotographyPeriod1Gernon/login

2. Log in using the user ID and password Mr. Gernon gave you.  (If you want to change your password, see Mr. Gernon during classtime.  Ask him to log in to the Aviary website and change your password.)

3.  Near the upper right hand corner of the page, click on the "New Creation" button and select "Create Images."

Navigate your way to your “Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder, and select one of your COMPOSITION images. Pick an image that is clearly focused, but someone might have to think about what the image is when looking at it.  "Upload" this image.

5. Use the filters to change this image. Open the Filters tab near the top of the page and highlight/select a filter that you would like to use to change your image.  If you do not like the filter effect you have chosen, or it does not change your image enough to make it abstract in your opinion, then click the green back arrow on the left side of the screen above the top of the tools.  Once you have found a filter effect that you are happy with, Save As your image...give it a name including your name and something like, "filter 1" or "filter 2," etc. i.e. "johnson filter 1"

6. After you have saved your first filtered image, click on the green back arrow to return your image to its original unchanged state.  Now, try another filter.  Keep trying new filter effects until you have another changed abstract image that you are happy with.  Another effect you can use is in the Image tab; try the Invert Colors effect.  If you like that effect, Save As your image again, but remember to change the name, such as "johnson filter 2"

7.  A couple more effects you can try after you have found a filter effect you are happy or mostly happy with in the Image tab are the Hue & Saturation effect and the Brightness & Contrast effect.  Keep playing around and making changes until you have 4 different filtered and altered abstract versions of the same image.  make sure to save each one with a slightly different name.

8.  Now it is time to Export your image to your “Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder. Click on >File and then >Export Image.  Once a new window opens, click on >Generate Image.  Be patient...sometimes it takes a while, and sometimes it takes even longer.  Once >Download Image turns green, click on it.  Now navigate to your “Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder, and save the image with a name like "owens filter 1."

9.  Do the same with all 4 different versions of your abstract image. Once you have all 4 of them in your
“Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder, there are 2 different ways you can prepare them for printing.
One option is >Copy  & >Paste  the 4 images into a Word Document. Fix the >Page Layout or >Page Setup >Orientation so the images fit correctly on your page--either >Portrait or >Landscape, whichever is appropriate for your image. Make the Margins smaller to about 0.5 inches on all sides so your iamges can be as big as possible on the page.  Stretch your images by grabbing the corner handles so all four are the same size and as large as possible, but still fitting on one page. Once you have it the way you want it, >Save As in the appropriate
\\kopachuck\stu-pub folder--try the folder called "Aviary #2-4 filters Abstraction."
The other option is to right click inside your
“Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder and make a >New >Folder.  Give it a name such as "Milkin 4 filters." >Copy  & >Paste or click & drag the 4 images into this New Folder.  Then >Copy  & >Paste or click & drag this entire folder in the appropriate \\kopachuck\stu-pub folder--try the folder called "Aviary #2-4 filters Abstraction."  If you choose this option, when your 4 images are printed, there will be white spaces separating them.

Some Possible Future Assignments...

Wanted Poster/Mug Shots…Working with Layers in Aviary

1.       Open your Digital Photo folder and right click on one of your 2 “in trouble” face images…Items 2 & 3 in Assignment #3 above.  Like these two images… Select Open With and select the red program, either Microsoft Office Picture Manager or Microsoft Windows 2010, depending on which computer system you are using. Edit the 2 images…Crop them to 5 x 7 Portraits removing most of the extra background space, but keeping some empty space above and on the sides of the face, and trying to make the faces about the same size and height within the frame. So they look more like these 2 images…                        Save As these 2 cropped images into your Digital Photo folder.

2.      Go to Mr. Gernon’s website and click on the appropriate link for your class to take you to the Aviary Education website.  Once you get to Aviary, login and start a New Creation.

3.      Upload one of your 2 newly cropped “in trouble” images from your Digital Photo folder.

4.      The first thing you want to do is get rid of the background behind your head and shoulders. Click on the Magic Wand tool and move it to the background. Click in the background. It should Select some or all of the background.  If it looks like part of the background is kind of dancing, it has worked. Press the Delete key on your keyboard, and some parts of the background should have disappeared and changed to white.  If nothing happened, move your mouse up to Edit, click, and select Delete at the bottom of the drop-down menu. Keep moving the Magic Wand around on the background clicking & deleting until most of the background has been removed.  If the Magic Wand tool does not work, try the Eraser tool which is with the Paint Brush tool. Zoom in so you can erase carefully.

5.      Once the background has been removed, it is time to create a New Layer.  On the right side of the screen is your Layers sidebar.  In the lower left corner of this window is a small double square with a smaller triangle icon on it. Click on that icon. You have created a New Layer. Above on the right side this new layer has shown up above the layer containing the image of your face, and it is highlighted in blue.

6.      Time to paint your New Layer a different color.  Click on the Paint Bucket tool, and move the Paint bucket over onto the background. Click and it will paint your image whatever color you have selected in the lower left hand corner of the screen inside the 2 overlapped squares, but Oh No!!! your face is now gone, right…?!?  Don’t worry, it is still there. Move your mouse back over to the Layers sidebar on the right side.  Click and drag the newly painted layer below the layer with your face, but wait until the black line shows up below your face layer, and then release the mouse.  Did your face show back up in front of the newly colored background?  It should have. If it did not, stop and ask for help.

7.      Next you are going to create another new layer with Text in it to create the lines and numbers to indicate height behind your face.  Select the Text tool on the left side of the screen…it is the letter “a” inside the square.  Change the size to about 50, and change the color to something that will contrast nicely with your background color.  If your background is black, white is a good choice for your letters.  Move the mouse near to the upper left corner of your image, making sure that you are on the left edge of the image, and click.  A curser should be blinking.  Make lines almost all the way across your image…try the dash key or the underscore key (which is shift with the dash key.)  When you get almost to the right side of the image, stop to leave enough space for numbers indicating how tall you are.  After the numbers, continue your line to the edge of the image.  Press the Enter key on your keyboard once or twice, and make another line across the image with more numbers.  Continue this process down the image until the lines and numbers will be covered by your shoulders.  If the lines and numbers are in front of your face, click on the layer with the “T” and drag it between your face layer and the painted background layer.

8.      Congratulations, your image is complete…time to Save As. In the upper right corner, click on Save As, and give your image a name.  The saving process takes a minute or two…be patient.

9.      Once you have successfully saved your new Mug Shot image, it is time to Export your creation to your Digital Photo folder.  Go to File and select Export Image. When the next pop-up window appears, on the drop-down arrow menu, select JPG or JPEG, and try about 50-60 for image quality.  Click Generate Image. It will take a moment or two, and then the Download button will turn green…click it.  Navigate to your Digital Photo folder, and click Save or Next or Download…whichever is the appropriate button.

10.  Once you are back in Aviary, go to File and select Import Image. Browse and find your other “in trouble” face…the view that you have not worked with yet. Once it uploads, all you should have to do is use the Magic Wand and Eraser tools to remove the background of this image. The height lines might not line up exactly, but you can make minor modifications to the text as needed.  If you have successfully removed the background from the second image, delete the layer that has your first face view, and Save As with a slightly different name.  Then Export this image, too.

11.  Open a Word document.  ...More to come later...

Friends & Family

      1.  Using a camera, capture at least 20 images of your Friends & Family members…Try to capture non-posed or candid moments in time.  Try to capture real moments of your friends and family members’ lives instead of…“Here are my friends posing and smiling for the camera, and of course he put the rabbit ears up behind her head…he does that in every picture he can.”

     2.  Transfer your images from the camera, memory card, or flash-drive to your “Digital Photo” folder          in your “My Documents” folder.

     3.  Print a Contact Sheet of your 20 (or more) images.  Right click on one of the thumbnail images

and select “Print.”  Follow the steps in the Print Wizard to create a contact sheet of those images…print no more than 35 images total on your contact sheet.

     4.  Select your favorite 2 images from this assignment.  Open Microsoft Picture Manager or a

similar simple image editing program, such as Microsoft Windows, and crop them to an aspect ratio of 5 x 7.  Also try the Auto Correct button to see if it enhances your pictures in terms of lighting, colors, brightness & contrast.  Save As these 2 images in your “Digital Photo” folder in your “My Documents” folder.

     5.  Turn these 2 images in…Find the appropriate folder for your class, (1st per or 2nd per) in the

\\kopachuck\stu-pub\ file, and copy/paste that image into the folder. Give them titles of “Your last name F & F1” & “Your last name F & F 2.”  Like this… “Williamz F & F 1”
